3 big challenges to imagining the future of work 3 big challenges to imagining the future of work Back when I was in my 20s and about to step into the “real world,” there was no discussion about working remotely, or “wanting to be mentored.”I’m 41 years old now, but back in the  90s, there was a completely different set of expectations about work. You got smacked around. You paid your dues. You worked hard and didn’t expect your employer to give you “life advice” or guidance as to how you could climb the ladder faster. That’s what college was for- at least, that’s what employers expected it to be.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!But today’s workplace looks nothing like it did twenty or thirty years ago.In some ways, the changes are obvious:  working remotely, for example, being the product of today’s new digital landscape.  In 2017, The New York Times reported  that “43 percent of employed Americans spend at least some time working remotely.” Then,  in 2018, CNBC reported  that “70% of people globally work remotely at least once per week.” That’s a lot of people not showing up to an office (which, ten years ago, was a non-negotiable requirement).But working remotely, for example, is just the tip of the iceberg.The truth is, some of the biggest workplace shifts have much more to do with education and communication.We now live in a world that’s determined by signals.Where you went to school. Who you’re connected to on LinkedIn. How many followers you have on Instagram. All of these things communicate, at a glance (and at scale), who someone “is” and where they fit into the hierarchy in society.Sometimes, we forget things didn’t use to be this way. Back in “the old days,” resumes couldn’t be crawled at scale using LinkedIn data and its ilk, and it was still possible for you to randomly connect with someone on a train- or interview with a company simply because they didn’t know any better.But that’s not how the working world operates anymore. Contrast that to today and, “Over 80 percent of employers and 90 percent of recruiters review social media profiles sometimes or all the time for insight on candidates,” according to a recruitment study by  The Martec Group.  Yet, with all these new digital tools at our disposal, “63% of recruiters report an inability to find qualified candidates as their primary challenge.”The reason is that the future of work is going to be dependent upon more than some simple qualification parameters.With the rise of automation, we’ve now created a workforce built upon keywords.When a recruiter is looking for a candidate, they’re plugging a few parameters into a technology tool or platform (college, degree, years of experience, previous title, etc.). They’re looking for the tool to “tell them” who they should be looking for, which inherently rules out any and all spontaneity. It fundamentally removes the option for a candidate that ma y not have any of those relevant “keywords” in their background, but culturally might be the perfect fit for your organization. That’s the world we live in today- and even though we’ve removed a lot of areas with friction with these digital tools, the entire process of “discovering meaningful connections” is still largely broken.These are the problems I find myself thinking through with my team at  Olmo, as we imagine what a world of  meaningful  connections looks like in the digital age.Here are the 3 big challenges we feel must be overcome in order to reimagine the future of work:1. Success begets success, which means someone who is just starting out struggles to get ahead.“The rich get richer” is a cliche because, well, it’s true.In modern day society, previous success has a disproportionate impact on future success, meaning that if you have proven yourself once it’s even easier to earn a second “at bat” (and so on, and so forth). For anyone who  hasn’t  yet experienced some level of success, this is a huge hurdle to overcome.There are usually two big hurdles that keep people from being able to “level up” professionally.The first is getting your foot in the door in the first place. Young people often struggle to get the jobs they truly want because most companies don’t want to inherit the risk of “training someone new.” Instead, they require 2+ years of experience, even for most entry-level positions. But how is a recent college graduate or someone who just finished a Master’s program supposed to have two years of experience?The second is, most people experience traction in their careers before they even know whether they’re doing something they enjoy in the first place. They graduate. They take a job. They get a promotion or two. And then by the time they realize how “the game” works, they’re too far gone. They would need to start completely over if they wanted to do something different, and the risks that come with that cause most people to accept their path in life and continue forward.So, how do you solve both of these issues?Networking.  Many of the most valuable skills in life and in business are soft skills: communication, relationship management, leadership, etc. Which means, if the system is not currently designed to help people maneuver and take control of their careers, then the only other way to advance and overcome some of these hurdles is to make meaningful connections with people with influence. We already know networking is the reason some people get terrific jobs right out of college and others don’t. We’re already aware of the power behind the cliche business phrase, “It’s all about who you know.”This is problem number one we’re thinking about as we design  Olmo.2. Companies are becoming more and more focused on short-term hires, which means employees need to be focused on acquiring transferable skills.Today’s job market is sending a very clear message to to day’s younger generations:The roles people are hiring for today, won’t be the roles they’re hiring for tomorrow.In 2016,  Pew Research Center published a fascinating report  on the state of American jobs. And while it’s full of incredibly impactful takeaways, one of the most obvious is our workforce’s desire to continue their own personal growth. According to the report, “More than half (54%) of adults in the labor force say it will be essential for them to get training and develop new skills throughout their work life in order to keep up with changes in the workplace.” That’s a significant amount of people who are aware that what they’ve been hired to do  today  might not be all that necessary in the future.On top of that, “35% of workers, including about 27% of adults with at least a bachelor’s degree, say they don’t have the education and training they need to get ahead at work. 45% of employed adults say they got extra training to improve their job skills in the past 12 months.”So, what does this data tell us?A recent  Wall Street Journal article put it eloquently: “Instead of teaching new skills to their current workers, employers often choose the disruption and high costs of layoffs or buyouts.” Which means, regardless of whether you’re an entry-level employee, a middle manager looking to make a career change, or a seasoned VP trying to become a leading executive, it’s not going to be the company that gives you the skills required to move up the ladder. It’s going to be you- and in your own time.All of this to say, as more and more companies look to automate tasks, and shortcut internal training, it’s going to be the human social skills that become the real business advantages. Skills like being able to seek out and learn from someone who already possesses the skill you’re looking to acquire. Being able to display value through a meaningful conversation. Being able to pick up on subtle social cues, and understand p eople’s pain points without needing them to be pointed out in the first place.As the future of work solidifies itself as digital, it’s going to be the fundamental human skills that remain most relevant.3. In the increasingly distracted and isolated digital age, people who understand how to form meaningful connections will have the advantage.Consuming social media is far from social activity.The truth is, many people consume social media by themselves. They feel as though they’re “logged in” to a big party when in reality, they’re sitting on the couch at home by themselves. It’s a deceiving experience and one that creates the illusion that we’re meeting people and connecting with (or “following”) each other.But talk to anyone who has built an incredibly powerful network, and chances are, they see social media as white noise.Because the most meaningful connections in life come through genuine conversation. They happen over dinner, or a night out trading stories. Th ey happen through an introduction from a close friend or a close co-worker. They are nurtured over time, and they usually turn into some sort of friendship, and in the end, that’s why they’re so valuable. Both parties have invested time and energy into building it.As the world continues in this direction of social media, it’s going to be the closed or vetted social networks that add the most value to people’s lives (which is actually the core reason why we’re launching  Olmo  as an invite-only platform). But more than that, it’s going to be the individuals who invest in bringing these online connections, offline, that possess the greatest professional advantage.People want to help people they know and have formed some sort of bond with. Why Its OK That You Still Have the Same Job Title - The Muse Why Its OK That You Still Have the Same Job Title Not too long ago, I looked at my LinkedIn profile and thought, “Wow, I’ve had my current title for a while now- almost two years.” It’s way longer than I’ve held any other position in the past before getting promoted. I started to wonder if there was something wrong with me, or if there was something more I should be doing to prove that I’m able to make the leap. When I started asking myself what that next step looks like, I realized it’s not always bad to have the same title for a few years. To play my own devil’s advocate, there are of course times when it’s not a good sign. Let’s take a look at both scenarios. It’s OK to Have the Same Title if You’re Getting the Opportunity to Lead New Projects As frustrating as it might be to not receive recognition for your hard work in the form of a promotion, that doesn’t necessarily mean your teammates don’t lean on you for more advanced projects than your current job title would suggest. Take a closer look at your current to-do list. Has your boss started trusting you with some really important initiatives? Do you feel that you’re still being compensated fairly? If the answer to both questions is yes, chances are that you’re punching above your weight-class and that everyone around you recognizes it. It’s Not OK to Have the Same Title if Your Responsibilities Haven’t Changed On the flipside, you might have some soul-searching to do if you’re doing the same tasks you were assigned in your first few months in your role. While a number of factors could be in play, the chances are that you’re still doing those things because you haven’t proven to anyone that you can handle a little more. If you’re unsure of how you’ve been performing, don’t be afraid to ask your boss for a little feedback to get a clearer idea of what’s really going on (this email template). You might not like what you hear, but you’ll know what you need to work on to take the next step in your career. It’s OK to Have the Same Title if You’re Learning New Skills Sure, it can be frustrating to be adding skills to your toolbox without a pat on the back from your boss or a raise. At the same time, it’s not as if you have to leave those skills behind if you decide to leave. When you’re feeling frustrated, keep this in mind: You are putting yourself in a much better position to score a new (and more senior) role in the near future. It’s Not OK to Have the Same Title if You’re Bored Here’s the thing: if you’re bored at work and your responsibilities haven’t changed much over the past few years, you’re only doing yourself a disservice. Are you seeking out opportunities for growth? Are you volunteering for things that are out of your comfort zone? If not, your lack of a title change is probably a reflection on your current effort level. It’s OK to Have the Same Title if There’s No Open Job for You to Step Into Unless you work for a handful of companies, your team probably doesn’t have an endless amount of money to promote people willy-nilly. You might be doing a lot of work- and a lot of it might be beyond your job description- but the truth of the matter might be that there’s simply no room to promote anyone right now. And while that’s frustrating, that’s in no way a reflection of your work. At some point, you’ll be recognized for your effort. WORRIED YOU'RE MISSING OUT ON AWESOME JOBS? Hearing “no” is never, ever fun. But if you’re constantly turning down opportunities to take a step in your career, nobody’s ever going to force you to do it. The truth is that getting a promotion’s a huge confidence booster, so it’s only natural to be anxious if you’re not getting one as quickly as you think you should. But take another look at your current work situation. If you’re going above and beyond and truly think you deserve a new title, don’t be afraid to start the conversation with your boss. Keep Healthy Snacks Nearby As Muse writer Nina Tamburello says, “When the vending machine or leftovers from the 3 PM meeting tempt you with their ease and convenience, it’s hard to just say no to chips and cookies during that mid-afternoon slump.” So, instead, leave a bag of almonds or kale chips next to your laptop. It’s much easier than getting up to snag something from the office kitchen. 2. Bring Your Own Lunch When you make it, and the local sandwich shop doesn’t, you get to control what kinds of foods you choose to eat. Yes, this takes work, but it’s so worth it for your health and your bank account. 3. Hang Out With the “Health Nuts” Science says you eat what your friends eat, so try surrounding yourself with people who’ll unintentionally help you kick your bad habits. 4. Stand Up and Stretch Often Even if it’s just to tackle some emails or short to-dos, spend 30 minutes a day standing at your desk- we bet it’ll boost your energy. Oh, and if your office doesn’t have any place where you can work standing up, then just literally make sure you’re physically standing up and stretching at least once an hour. Turn the Music Down Loud music is harsh on the eardrums, so if you’re constantly blasting it through your headphones, turn the volume down a notch. And this way, you’ll be able to hear if your boss is calling for you. 18. Give Your Hands a Break They’re doing the legwork all day (unlike your legs), so give them a rest by stretching them out or taking a second to relax them in your lap. You don’t want to get carpel tunnel, do you? 19. Breathe Cheesy, I know, but if you just take one minute (or more!) of your time a day to stop, look away from your work, and just breathe, you’ll feel a heck of a lot better. The study  ultimately found that employees with funny bosses had a more interpersonal rapport with their boss, which in turn, increased their work engagement. But humor, in general, was also likely to increase follower deviance.Aggressive humor can signal that ‘respect and civility’ are not valuedUnder a funny boss, employees became more likely to make fun of someone at work, snipe rude comments, steal office supplies and show up to work late. But there was one kind of funny boss that was most likely to amplify the effects of deviant behavior - the aggressively funny boss. Their jokes land more like punches, sometimes at the expense of others. The sarcastic teasing has a mean undercurrent running through it.The study uses the example of an offhand comment like “John, you seem so busy” to sarcastically send “a message that John is not putting up enough effort.” But when this kind of humor becomes the norm, it signals that mutual respect and civility is not important, the study found.Ultimately, leadership sets the tone of how employees should conduct themselves at work. It’s a lesson that bosses need to be mindful of what kind of jokes they use at work.“We’re not trying to say leaders should not engage in humor,”  Zhenyu Liao, one of the study’s authors,  said. “They should be more mindful about their humor. Your role, your status - all of your actions - will send out very strong signals about what behaviors are acceptable.”

Constancy and predictability enable a more straightforward and reliable integration into the electric utility grid. Wave energy also offers much higher energy densities, so devices can extract more power from a smaller volume at consequently lower costs. On the Oregon coast, for example, wave heights offshore average 3.5 meters during the winter, which translates to about 50 kW per meter of crest length. During the summer, average wave heights are lower, about 1.5 meters, which convert to 10 kW per meter of crest length. Considering an overall average of 30 kW per meter, the total energy potential along the entire Oregon coast (which is 460 kilometersor 280 milesin length) is in the range of 13,800 megawatts. The average electrical energy consumption in the state is about 5,000 to 6,000 MW. Other areas, such as Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, and Norway all have substantial wave power potential due to features they share: a relatively high latitude and a long stretch of ocean immediately to the west. Its not difficult to envision just how to tap this energy using a water-borne analogue to the terrestrial wind farm; call it a wave park. Wind turbines would be replaced by wave energy-capturing buoys, each having a power cable that drops down along the tether to the anchor and is routed to a central junction box located on the seafloor.
